I us a UV separate and at first I thought I couldn't see a diffence but with a close inspection of my photographs with and without them I realized that pictures with the sun in them come out much clearer.. which makes comprehend. I also use it to protect the front of my lense from getting scratched and at only about $15.00 I would rather get a scratch on that then on my $200 dollar lens. Polarizing filters serve a couple purposes. First they can cut down on reflections off of water and other reflective objects. Second they can alter the sky be a much deeper shade of color especially so during the mid-day hours. Here's a cerebrate that shows an emulation of a polarizer on water. I have stoped using UV filters as I didn't desire the change in my pictures. The stare off of the flat glass would often make some pictures appear hazzy or I would see funny spots of light. The polarizer filter on the other hand can really do some awesome things for you pictures if you use it alter.
