I am trying to decide on which model to buy either theTH-42PZ77U or TH-42PX75U. I will be using it pretty much for gaming and DVD's (currently non HD DVDs). The native resolution of 1024x768 compared to the 1980 by 1050 will it make much of a difference?I have read (on this site)that dependent upon your viewing distance mine is apx 8 feet will determine the need for the high resolution. The fact that its a 1024x768 and not a "true" HD is what has me worried. Thanks for any and all responses !

The fact that its a 1024x768 and not a "true" HD is what has me worried. Thanks for any and all responses !
720P IS HD. All over the air broadcasts are in 720p or 1080i NOT 1080p. Blu-Ray and HD DVD are 1080p. My 720p plasma looks great and it's 50'. I sit Maybe 8" away. Don't fall for 'the bigger is better marketing sceme. Doesn't anyone else find it interesting that these 1080p sets started showing up when the 720p (which in the begining ,were being marketed as 1080i) sets became fairly affordable? PROFIT MARGINS. As prices for new products fall the manufacturers have to come up with a way to make up for lost profit margins. 1080p is bigger than 720p so it must be better right? I put this 1080p marketing ploy right up there with 'digital ready' speakers and ever increasing mega pixel count digital cameras. Nothing but marketing.
If you are going to do a lot of gaming. I'd suggest the 42-PZ series set. The added resolution will be of much benifit. This (the PX) TV has a great picture for TV and DVD despite not being real HD-- but gaming and use with a computer are quite different. Not all 720 is HD; 1280 X 720 is HD-- Panasonic (720) 50" sets are all 1366 X 768 and one of those (PX series) would be better for gaming than the 42" 1024X769 unit. Generally a lot of people feel that an LCD is better for gaming/computer use than a plasma-- mostly because of "burn in" on those games that have static images on the screen for long periods.
According to the ATSC who sets the standards for HD. 720 is NOT HD. Now with that being said. 720p sure does look good but 1080 whether it is i or p looks better much betterI would go for the 1080p set.
Anthem. Conrad Johnson. Dish Network/JVC. Dynaudio. Infinity. Integra. JL Audio. Klipsch. Magnepan. Marantz. Martin Logan. Onkyo. Panasonic. Paradigm. Sumiko and Toshiba are the brands equipment I currently use. I have owned/used and tested equipment made by just about any manufacturer you can name.

Maybe my info is old then. I thought most HD brodcasts were in 720p. If 720p isn't HD then how do these stations get away with saying that they are broadcasting in high def?

I am not sure how they get away with it but since it is more than 480 it is higher resolution than standard def. Most HD broadcasts are in 1080i and to my knowledge only Fox and ESPN broadcast in 720.

720p is most definitely HD according to the ATSC. The 6 ATSC HD broadcast formats are 1080i at 30 frames per second. 1080p/30. 1080p/24. 720p/60. 720p/30 and 720p/24. See Table 3 formats in ATSC document A53 which is downloadable from the ATSC web site. BTW. ABC also broadcasts 720p/60 in addition to Fox and ESPN.
ATSC recognizes. I have been over this many times with many others and in fact contacted ATSC for clarification. 1080 is HD 720 is not according to ATSC standards and tables.

high-definition television systems: (i) the 1080i (1,080 actively-interlaced lines of resolution). (ii) the 1080p (1,080 progressively-scanned lines) and
(iii) the 720p (720 progressively-scanned lines) each system produces a 16:9 aspect ratio image.
is the shorthand name for a category of HDTV video modes. The number 720 stands for 720 lines of vertical display resolution while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced. When broadcast at 60 frames per second.
720p features the highest temporal (motion) resolution possible
Progressive scanning reduces the need to prevent flicker by filtering out fine details so spatial (sharpness) resolution is much closer to 1080i than the number of scan lines would suggest. In the USA.
because the smoother image is desirable for fast-action sports telecasts whereas 1080i is used by CBS. NBC. HBO. Showtime and Discovery HD due to the crisper picture particularly in non-moving shots. ATSC Standards document a digital television format which will replace (in the United States) the analog NTSC television system[1] (NTSC is used mostly in North America and Japan). It was developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee. The high definition television standards defined by the ATSC produce wide screen 16:9 images
At Sears the price difference between the 1080p and 720p was 100 bucks or wait for BF sale and the difference rises to 150. I read that burn in wasn't much of a problem after the breaking-in period? My gaming sessions don't usually last longer than 2 hours so I did not think it would be a problem. Currently most of the lcd's that are having a great sale seem to have problems. Like the banding issues that the Aquos have. Thanks again for all of the replies!

Good grief!Once again you are wrong with your one of your dogmatic pronouncements and continue to spew your misinformation after your error has been pointed out to you together with a reference to an official document which shows your error. I recently purchased the 42pz77u. I compete xbox 360 and wii games on it all the time. I undergo yet to see any sort of destroy it at all. Not even for a change integrity second after I turn off the TV. I check a ton of sports so I figured the ticker along the furnish might have given me some visualise retention.. havent seen it yet.. and I look for it all the measure. The pixel shifter tech on the panasonic is interesting. If you be really close (undergo to be about 6 inches away from the screen) you can see that the pixels do alter positions. Anyway. I like the TV and evaluate that plasma is a exceed choice than even the nicest of LCDs. I still see the pixeling of abstain moving objects even on the LCDs with great response times/refresh rates.
Glad to hear that you are so pleased. That Panasonic pixel wobble (I believe that is their name for it) certainly seems to do the cozen when it comes to no destroy in.

You must do the research as I have and the official document you have in mind verifies my statement not yours. I will not argue this point with you anymore.
Good! Then try actually reading the document again. Your statements indicate that you have not read it very carefully if you undergo construe it at all (which I seriously doubt).

That is a screen format. My posts were about ATSC broadcast formats and clearly indicated that.
I just picked up the TH-42PZ77U this week at BB. It is on sale for $1299 which was the deciding factor. It has an excellent conceive of and the anti-glare feature is nice. Get one and see.

Ok I just got back from my weekly Best Buy visit. I've been looking for my back up plasma for a while now (I already have a 55inch Hitachi which I love) I've done a lot of research and my dillema has been between the following:Pio 5010Pio 5080Panny 50pz700uSamsung 5084I got lucky this time becase these sets were arranged in a square formation for best comparion. Here's what I found:Pio 5010 vs Pio 5080--------------------------I COULD NOT SEE ANY DIFFERENCE between the 5010 and 5080! I was 3 feet away and looking hard for the crisper image on the 5010. No luck they were both IDENTICAL inway! I anticipate it's probably because of the communicate they were being fed but since I don't intend on watching a huge amount of true 1080p content the price difference is hard to confirm. Pio 5080 vs Panny 50PZ700U----------------------------------Compago the 5080 to the Panny was NOT EVEN bring together! Panny looked washed out whites not as white blacks not as black everything looked to be in a cloud. On top of that everything had this strange orange-green hue. I thought maybe this one was defective but the other Pannys looked the same. act in mind this is only because I was comparing them align by align. I'm sure I would like the panny if I brought it home (Panny fanboyz please don't blackball me). Pio 5080 vs Sammy 5084------------------------------After runling out the Panny. I moved onto the Samsung. Let me first clarify that I was not expecting to like this TV! On my past BB trips the sammy was in the corner by itself and I usually ruled it out and moved on. To my affect. I liked the Samsung's picture better than the 5080's! The contrast ratio was excellent and the colors seemed very natural! I studied the two side-by-side for a very long time. The difference was marginal but clear and I was ready to fall in like with the 5084. WHEN... THIS IS WHERE THE PLOT THICKENS!!Another TV seemed to be calling me (no I'm not crazy)... I ignored it at first since I was comparing very specific sets. But this thing had just INSANE picture. So I decided to furnish it a chance. It was the
(yeah I know a crappy LCD. Bleh!). Let me express you! This TV had contrast ratio that looked 5 generations ahead of any TV on the wall. The whites were blinding! The blacks were deepest I've seen! The colors natural! I tried to rationalize why I comfort prefer a plasma over this seemingly ameliorate set. So I looked for the typical problems you associate with LCD. Does the TV looks too "2d"? No it didn't appear to undergo any less "dimensions" than the 5084 alter next to it. How about the communicate jitter? No matter how hard I tried. I couldn't see it. There were plenty of full-screen pans and it performed just as come up as the plasmas.
So now I have finally chosen my next plasma. Except it's not a plasma but an LCD. The Samsung T5271F. Hands down the beat TV I've seen so far. Yet I'm comfort a bit hesitant. Is there anything do by with this TV? Maybe my eyes are decieving me? Please post comments!
I've looked at the Sammy 71 countless times and for me XBR4/5 blows it out of the wet and it's not even close. BUT! The best flat adorn I've ever seen is the Pioneer Kuro Elite 1080p.
Thanks for the tip. I'll look at the Sony's next time. Please understand I'm so new to LCD. I've never considered it as a viable alternative to Plasma. I'll be for more info on the LCD forum (especially since I will probably be banned from this one hehe!)
Well the 5271 is a fantastic TV and one that keeps popping onto and off of my list for brief periods of time. They look pretty impressive. The 5271 and the XBR4 are both impressive LCD's personally I'm more impressed with the XBR4 but it is more money by a large margin. I do not evaluate you are crazy in the slightest you may just prefer that LCD. What I will express you is that change surface the beat LCD's experience from degredation if you're not front and bear on. Regardless of how good the TV is THEY will suffer in the PQ department when you're off angle. Also. LCD's at least to me are quite bright when actually domiciliate they're so bright its almost harsh. After calibration the XBR series is much better but still a bit overly bright. As for 2d images.. there's no such thing as a 3D tv so dont buy into this 3D thing. What I ordain say is that on calibrated sets same obtain side by align the plasma 5080HD has a more realistic color saturation when compared with change surface the XBR4.
Not surprised at all that you liked the 5084 more than the Panny or the much hyped Pios. I am surprised by the LCD preference though. I have seen a few people have in mind the 71 series performance in a very positive way. Next measure I'm in BestBuy I'll seriously be and compare these LCDs with the plasmas.
I've done a lot of back and forth comparing between the Pio 5010. XBR4 and Sammy 71. The Pio still has the best blacks and most "natural" looking image. The XBR4 had the exceed blacks of the two LCD's but they still had that tell-tale "glow". It's the one thing that drives me crazy about LCD's - that glowing black. Gotta say the Sammy 81's blacks don't be to glow much with the LED backlight but costs much more than the 5010. I'd say as far as non-LED LCD's the XBR4 is probably the beat overall right now.
Speed thanks for the info! The angle ordain not be an issue for me because it's for the bedroom (watched from bed) so we will always be head-on. The brightness comment makes much more sense though. desire I said the whites were blinding. In fact. I was a bit concerned about how bright it was. My thinking was that it's easier to turn down settings below maximum levels (whites on LCD) than reaise them above maximum settings (whites on plasmas). Please change by reversal me if I'm wrong.
Speed thanks for the info! The angle ordain not be an issue for me because it's for the bedroom (watched from bed) so we will always be head-on. The brightness mention makes much more sense though. Keep in object LCD's are also sensitive to eye level above or below the check. Not trying to communicate you out of an LCD. There are some good ones but I was disappointed in how change surface the XBR 4 lost a bit of detail from align to side and top to bottom. As for adjusting the brightness you've gotta consider the lighting in your room. I undergo not seen a properly calibrated XBR4 yet. I undergo construe that the light output is much more reasonable. However. I have seen the XBR2 calibrated and it was pretty bright especially in transition scenes. Could just be my eyes though. Are you going to watch this much at night? If so you may want to carry home a smaller version of said LCD to try it. You may be surprised at how fatiguing they can be. On the flip side if you've got a lot of windows and you'll be watching it during the day you'll undergo to believe the reflection problem of plasmas.
personally my eyes experience from a lot of degenerate from watching lcds nothing on lcds but they almost blind me. I own the panny 700u an xbr3 a 150fd and an older pio i experience they have improved but the xbr during abstain communicate sports is really hard to check i accept with the pio vs panny thing but lcds never look natural to me. The blacks fluctuate too much and the whites alter you. I guess the plasmas just fit me exceed.... You might.

I realize this is a LCD vs Plasma battle but I'm having affect deciding which to get. They are both similar in price and the 50" panny 1080p is kinda out of my range (for now)Has anyone been able to look at both of these? How are the black levels/brightness etc. I game quite a bit and watch a ton of movies (BD/HD-DVD) and glare really isn't an issue in the dwell.
hi there first of all glad to undergo joined as I've heard lots of good stuff about this place!I'm a first time flat adorn buyer myself and undergo been debating whether to get LCD or plasma first of all. Our living room has west facing windows which are 16 feet long so it gets lots of sun in the afternoons. We don't undergo great curtains so reducing the light would not be possible. So I anticipate we have two problems: 1) glare and 2) bright room in general. Based on that. I'd heard LCD is the way to go because of the glare and bright conditions. I understand that plasmas however furnish much better pictures. So i thought it was an easy decision to get an LCD and was about to get the #1 rated Samsung T4661F but then I came across all the Panasonics today (which are highly rated plasmas already) and as a bonus now have anti glare coatings! So now what do I do? Are these new Panasonics comparable to LCD's and I should now locate my decision purely on how the picture quality is?I'm trying to figure out if brightness of the dwell and glare are in fact the same issue which both would be resolved with these Pannys or displace ie if I don't have a glare problem if I get the Panny if it would comfort be exceed to get an LCD regardless b/c the dwell will be bright. I believe LCD's have a brighter picture than the plasmas which is why they're better in a bright room right? (I read this on a site: "In the "real world" situations. LCDs are 4 times brighter than plasma displays.")Thanks in advance for the help everyone!PS alter 6:45 PM PST - Now I'm really confused! I came across this info which says the opposite about which is exceed in a bright room.. aargh!Your dwell LightingBecause of these fundamental differences in how the TVs work the best choice may depend on placement of the show. The biggest calculate is often dwell light: if you have a darker room either will bring home the bacon but plasmas are more visible in a brighter room. Two factors be for this: the contrast ratio and the brightness. differentiate is the difference between the brightest and darkest colors the TV can create (color vs black). Brightness is a measure of how powerful the light is in general (desire a higher wattage light bulb: 100w vs 25w). For both numbers the higher the determine the exceed. Plasma contrast is typically 10,000 to 1 (10000:1) or better while LCD is about 1/10th as good at 1200:1. Many LCD displays use a dynamic method to improve contrast up to 5000:1. This helps by adapting the be based on the overall brightness of the scene being watched. However because plasmas are brighter and have more contrast the conceive of looks better in a brighter dwell. One air though is that the plasma panel is glass which can easily reflect room lights and windows. Neither check ordain bring home the bacon come up in direct sunlight but you may have better luck placing an LCD to avoid reflections from many windows. A exceed solution is a set of window curtains to shift the problem altogether...
I just went through this. On Saturday I bought the 50PX75U plasma from Circuit City. I bought the Panasonic on price and good reviews. But today I returned it and bought a Sony 46W3000 LCD instead. (I bought the 46W3000 because it was on sale and $100 less than the 46V3000) The Panasonic is less expensive but there are a bring together of things I didn't desire:1. Glare from the check and the glossy border. Looking at this TV was like looking in a mirror. And it's been cloudy for the past bring together of days so our living dwell has been pretty dark. When the sun came through the window this morning I knew I had to get a different TV. 2. maim remote - not enough buttons not enough control3. Lack of variable audio create. I hate having to use 2 remotes to hold back the TV (one for channels the other for volume). Plus the use of two remotes confuses my dear wife.4. Menu system for setting up the TV channels and tweaking not user friendly. With that said the Panasonic has an excellent picture. The Sony is 1080p set where as the Panasonic is 720p. I couldn't tell the difference in picture quality with HDTV. I'm not running Blueray so maybe I don't experience what I a missing. The Panasonic does exceed with SD material but the Sony is book. HDTV on the Sony is great. I desire the Sony's features menus remote and variable audio out.. and not much stare change surface in our bright family room. The Sony also has a dedicated PC enter which is nice too. My last TV was a Sony 34" XBR800 CRT (220lbs!). It delivered flawless service for the past 5 years but I decided it was measure to upgrade to a bigger set. While I'm impressed with both the Sony LCD and the Panasonic Plasma the HD conceive of on the Sony CRT is hard to defeat IMHO. I guess I can always use it as boat anchor.
The 50PX77U has the anti stare coating... Makes a big difference from what i denote at the store this is all so tough to choose! I heard when watching regular TV which over 75% of the channels I watch are plasma produces a better picture b/c it's a bit softer than the LCD. So I don't know.. they don't undergo a regular feed at the hold on of course b/c they don't want you to see the crappy picture!
